Where do I stand

The Norwood Classification also provides a framework for understanding how the patient’s baldness may progress. This becomes a very important variable when the patient chooses a hair transplant procedure. Understanding how baldness may progress enables the surgeon to deliver a beautifully natural-looking end result by strategically restoring areas that are thin, balding, or susceptible to future hair loss.

The 7 stages of the Norwood Classification are shown below. Each stage depicts a unique circumstance in which hair is thinning, shedding, or balding in specific areas:

FUT Hair Transplant

In FUT hair is removed in a single thin strip taken from the donor area of the back of scalp and then dissected into  individual follicular units using microscope.

FUE Hair Transplant

FUE, the follicular units are removed directly from the back and sides of the scalp using a punch device

PRP Therapy

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma which contains approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. In addition, it contains platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF) and other bioactive proteins that aid in wound healing and possibly hair growth.

FUE vs FUT Hair Transplants

Decreased healing time in the donor area
The small holes that are created with FUE will heal in a shorter period of time than the linear FUT-strip scar.
No linear scar in donor area
Important for those who wear their hair very short where the scar may become visible
Important for those who have a history of keloids, thickened or stretched scars.
Less post-op discomfort in the donor area
With FUE there is essentially no discomfort after the procedure

With each subsequent session, the scarring in FUE is additive
For example, if the first FUE session is 2,000 grafts, there will be 2,000 tiny round scars. With a second session of 2,000 grafts, there will be a total of 4,000 scars.
FUE is usually more expensive than FUT
This is mainly because FUE is a more time consuming with long hours of staff and surgeon working over the patient
In large FUE hair transplant sessions, the entire donor area must be shaved
This may present a significant temporary cosmetic problem for working patients or those in the public eye.
